Tyre Life-A Mystery Unsolved

Life of your tyres depends on you similarly how your life depends on you. There is an expected life span but your habits in personal life can affect the life span of both, you and your car. Smoking, drinking, doing drugs, etc. can reduce your life span, whereas, ignorance towards maintenance, delayed maintenance, no regular inspection, etc. can reduce the life of your tyres. Take care of your car tyres like your life depends on it because it does.

Expected Life of Tyres

There isn’t a definite number as of how much a tyre must last before it can be considered old. It majorly depends on how you care for your car and its parts. From driving habits to road conditions, there are several factors that affect the life span of a tyre.

A basic guideline states that you should get your tyres checked every five years. Tyres that are more than ten years old should be changed without giving a second thought to it. Old tyres are not capable of providing you with the performance capabilities as that of new tyres. Front tyres should ideally be changed after 20,000 miles and rear wheels at 40,000 miles or more.

Front tyres usually wear off faster than the rear ones, as they face more resistance when the brakes are applied. This extra resistance is due to the presence of front brakes and the extra force inflicted on them due to being in front. Inadequate air pressure reduces the tread and also reduces the controlling and gripping ability of the car. Mounting different tyres from different manufacturers can cause them to wear unevenly, thus needing replacements at different times.

When to Replace

This isn’t a very difficult task to do and just a few checks should be enough to let you know about the condition of your car tyres. Check your tyres regularly for any visible damage on the tread surface or the sidewalls, like, punctures, penetrations, cuts, etc. Check the tread depth of your tyres and make sure they are above the required amount. The legal tread limit is 1.6mm, whereas, it is recommended to change the tyre when its tread depth reaches 3mm mark. You could be fined £2,500 per tyre as well as three penalty points on your license if you’re caught driving a car with tyres below the legal limit.

You could also use the 20p test to know the tread depth of your tyres. Place a 20p coin in your tread grooves. If you can see the outer rim or edge of the coin, you should get your tyre replaced.

Other Signs of Wearing

While driving your car at about 40mph, if you feel your tyres wobbling, then you could have worn-off tyres. This could also mean that your car might be out of balance, but this also occurs when you have worn-off tyres.

How to Increase Tyre Life

  • Rotate your tyres every 7,500 miles to make sure the wearing is evenly distributed.

  • Prefer smooth driving. Sudden acceleration or heavy braking can also affect the tyres’ life span.

  • Maintain adequate air pressure.

  • Avoid potholes and bumps on the road. It could disturb the alignment, which would then in return affect the tyres.

  • Wheel alignment is an important aspect of your car. Get it done regularly.

  • Choose good quality tyres for your car. You’ll have a better life span in hand, while also having increased performance.

You need to understand that tyres are a valuable aspect of your car and need your care equally. Ignoring them is of no good as maintaining the other parts while compromising mobility isn’t the best thing that you can do.
