Is It A One Or A Ten?

Is It A One Or A Ten?

Pain hurts. The word itself comes from theVitamove Back Pain ReliefLatin word poena meaning punishment pain. Usage of the word has changed the meaning to a sensation that hurts. And it is individual. Only the person experiencing pain can accurately describe it. There are two major classes of pain: acute and chronic. An acute pain is severe pain from surgery, broken bones, cuts, or burns. It usually doesn't last longer than six months. When the injury heals the pain leaves. A chronic pain lasts much longer but the severity of the pain can be either mild or intense. There is a wide range of chronic pain. Examples of chronic pain are headaches, back pain, cancer, and arthritis.

Now back to the numbering scale. The number the patient tells the doctor will determine his treatment. The first step in treatment usually is drugs, either non-prescription or prescription. Non-prescription drugs are referred to as OTCs, or over the counters. They are either NSAIDS like aspirin, which by the way is the most popular pain reliever used, Advil, Motrin, and Aleve, or acetaminophen like Tylenol. These drugs are the most common treatment for just about everything from headaches to fever to arthritis. However, because these drugs are OTCs, they are mistakenly considered completely safe with little or no serious side effects. Yet, stomach upset, stomach bleeding, ulcers, heartburn, diarrhea, increased blood pressure and allergic reaction can and do occur. Acetaminophens like Tylenol may also cause liver failure and death when taken long-term or with alcohol.

It is vital to remember the type of OTCs used by an adult is not the same for use by a child. For example, aspirin should never be given to a child. It can cause a very serious illness in children called Reye Syndrome which can affect the child's brain and liver. Always check with a doctor before administering any medication to a child even if it is an over the counter medicine.

If a non-prescription drug does not relieve the pain, a more potent prescription drug is prescribed. Opiates like codeine, morphine, and oxycontin will usually be next in line. Opiates are a group of drugs that have been used for thousands of years in treating pain. They are derived from the opium in the poppy plant. They are powerful pain killers but can be highly addictive. They should be used with extreme caution but are safe if carefully monitored.
