There are different levels and types of yoga, although if you join a gym or health club you will probably be practicing basic moves designed to increase flexibility, strengthen your core and calm your state of mind. Everyone's body is different and capable of different movements; for example different people may have more flexibility in the lower body or upper body. Yoga is not competitive and if you participate, you are doing it for yourself rather than to compete against others. Yoga should be comfortable and relaxing - if you find it is stressful and causing you discomfort, you may be trying to do it at a level that is too advanced for you. Regardless of the type of yoga you practice, most sessions end with your body in what is known as the Shavasana position, which is designed to keep your body at rest and still. This also allows muscles to relax and hopefully a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Yoga benefits both the mind and the body and an important aspect of how to do yoga is realizing the importance of breathing. Yoga teaches you to be aware of how your breath enters and leaves your body and while practicing yoga, you may be encouraged to visualize your breath as healing any pain or discomfort in your body. Yoga should not cause pain or discomfort - it should have the opposite effect - and if you experience any pain, you should stop whatever exercise you are doing. If you have too much stress in your life and want to learn to relax and keep fit at the same time, yoga for beginners is a wonderful way to start.
